In the tradition of classical modernism, intensive color, light and movement shape the paintings of Stuttgart artist Herbert Bauer. Starting with landscape painting in the 1950s, he moved through stylized forms to a free style of gesture in his painting. 

In the 1970s, the theme of the cosmos emerged in his work. Celestial bodies and universes in brilliant color appear in oil paintings, drawings and lithographs.
